Steel Plate for Crane Boom: Q690/Q890 High-Strength Plate & NM Wear Plate
Crane boom structures demand plate with high nominal yield strength, dependable low-temperature toughness and predictable weldability. Yunhao supplies Q690D/Q690E and Q890 high-strength steel plate to GB/T 1591-2018, paired with NM360–NM500 abrasion-resistant plate to GB/T 24186 for liners — thickness 4–60 mm, width 1500–3200 mm, MOQ 25 t, delivery 15–30 days.
Working Scenario and Load DemandsCrane booms see repeated dynamic bending, compression and torsion in every lifting cycle, so the structure must deliver a high strength-to-weight ratio: less boom self-weight means more payload and reach. Plate is also expected to keep its yield strength after welding and to hold reliable impact toughness at low working temperatures. That is why boom members are typically specified from the 690 MPa nominal yield class and upward, with wear-resistant plate reserved for liners and contact parts.
Recommended Grades for Boom StructuresFor boom chords, jibs and slewing structures, we supply Q690D/Q690E plate to GB/T 1591-2018: minimum yield 690 MPa at thickness up to 16 mm, tensile strength 770–940 MPa (subject to the mill test certificate), available in 4–60 mm thickness and 1500–3200 mm width. For heavier boom sections, Q890 (D/E) reaches a nominal yield of 890 MPa (GB/T 1591), with detailed values confirmed per mill test certificate. Liners and hopper parts pair with NM360–NM500 abrasion-resistant plate to GB/T 24186; hardness rises from grade 360 to 500, with NM400 at 370–430 HBW (subject to mill test certificate).
Standards and International ComparisonQ690 and Q890 are covered by GB/T 1591-2018. In strength class they sit close to EN 10025-6 S690QL and S890QL, but the delivery-condition systems differ, so the accurate wording is similar strength class with different delivery condition, not equivalence; acceptance follows the mill test certificate. Q690D is specified with minimum KV2 impact energy of 34 J at -20 °C and Q690E at -40 °C (GB/T 1591). These grades are usually delivered quenched and tempered (QT), or by TMCP on some routes; confirm the actual condition on the mill test certificate.
Fabrication and Welding NotesBoom segments are welded into box or lattice sections, so welding procedure qualification matters. The microalloyed chemistry of Q690/Q890 is designed for weldability, but it is mill-specific: obtain the mill test certificate before approving consumables. In practice, use low-hydrogen consumables with controlled heat input and interpass temperature, and limit flame straightening near welds. Z-direction performance can be added by agreement for highly restrained joints. NM wear plate is normally supplied quenched and tempered (confirm on the mill test certificate); follow QT-grade practice for cutting and hole making, and confirm bending limits case by case.
Ordering and InquiryYunhao exports crane and engineering-machinery steel plate via Tianjin and Qingdao, China.
