Shipbuilding Steel Plate: AH36 / DH36 / EH36 Hull Structural Grades
Hull blocks, decks and bulkheads need steel that keeps its yield strength through the thickness and passes Charpy testing at the temperature the class rules assign to each member. The GB/T 712 grades AH36, DH36 and EH36 answer with a minimum yield of 355 MPa (t ≤ 50 mm) and 34 J impact values at 0, −20 and −40 ℃. Yunhao supplies these marine steel plates with classification society certificates (CCS/ABS/LR/DNV/BV) attached as the order requires; the actual certificate prevails.
Service demands on hull steelHull plating works in a load path that mixes wave slamming, cargo loads and, on some trades, genuinely low sea temperatures. That is why ship plate is judged not only on yield strength but on notch toughness at a defined test temperature. The GB/T 712 high-strength hull structural grades serve hull blocks, deck and bulkhead structures and offshore platform topside structures, where welds must stay sound and the plate must deform predictably instead of cracking. Each hull member is therefore assigned a temperature class by the classification society's rules.
Grade selection: AH36, DH36, EH36The three grades sit on one strength level: a minimum yield of 355 MPa for thickness up to 50 mm under GB/T 712. What separates them is the Charpy V-notch test temperature — AH36 is tested at 0 ℃, DH36 at −20 ℃ and EH36 at −40 ℃, each with a requirement of 34 J or more. In practice the choice follows the member's position in the hull and the class rules for the trading area: the colder the service, the further the selection moves from AH36 toward DH36 and EH36.
Standard cross-referenceThe GB/T 712 hull structural steel system maps closely to international practice: the grades correspond approximately to the EN 10025-4 S355 family in its marine grades and sit in the same system as ASTM A131 EH36. On top of the material standard, hull plate is normally ordered with a classification society certificate — CCS, ABS, LR, DNV, BV and others — attached as the order requires, and the actual certificate prevails. When a drawing cites a foreign designation, the first step is to match it to the GB/T 712 temperature grades before quoting.
Welding and fabrication notesPlate of the AH36 family is produced with weldability in mind and follows normal shipyard practice: consumables matched to the grade and the class rules, controlled preheat and inter-pass temperature on thicker sections, and attention to distortion on thinner deck panels. For thick plate and offshore topside work, through-thickness (Z-direction) properties can be required and should be agreed at order stage — see our Z-direction performance plate page. The delivery condition follows the classification society's rules for the grade and thickness; confirm the exact condition and values on the mill test certificate.
Stock, certificates and how to orderYunhao keeps regular stock in heavy plate lines and supplies AH36, DH36 and EH36 against order; because hull plate is a certified product, we do not quote a standing tonnage in stock — contact us for the current position and lead time. Classification society certificates are attached as the order requires and the actual certificate prevails; chemical composition and mechanical values are confirmed on the mill test certificate (MTC). Related lines include our HSLA plate and carbon steel plate ranges. Send your drawing, grade, thickness and required class society for a quotation and delivery schedule.
