ERW vs LSAW vs Seamless Steel Pipe
Three pipe types, three manufacturing routes. Here is what actually differs — and a simple rule for choosing the right one.
Manufacturing ProcessERW is high-frequency electric resistance welded from hot-rolled coil; LSAW is double-side submerged-arc welded from plate; seamless is pierced and hot-rolled from solid billet — no weld at all.
Diameter & WallERW covers 76-660 mm with 4-16 mm wall; LSAW starts where ERW stops, 406-1422 mm; seamless is strongest in smaller and medium sizes, 57-820 mm.
Pressure & ApplicationSeamless for high-pressure and critical service (boilers, cracking units); LSAW for long-distance oil & gas pipelines; ERW for structural use, water and general fluid transport.
Price & Lead TimeERW is the most cost-effective with the shortest lead time; seamless carries a 15-25% premium; LSAW price depends heavily on wall thickness.
Rule of ThumbMatch the pipe to the consequence of failure — not to the name. Critical line: seamless or LSAW PSL2. Everything else: ERW usually wins on cost.
