Q460 Steel Plate: Where It Sits and What It Replaces
Q460 is the working grade of the 460 MPa class under GB/T 1591-2018: guaranteed 460 MPa minimum yield, 550–720 MPa tensile, and Charpy KV2 of 34 J in C, D or E quality — there is no B tier. This page fixes its position in the grade ladder and the sensible substitution moves.
The NumbersIn the base thickness range Q460 guarantees 460 MPa minimum yield with 550–720 MPa tensile. Impact is verified at 34 J for the C, D and E qualities at 0 ℃, −20 ℃ and −40 ℃ respectively — a hint that this grade is aimed at engineered, often outdoor structures rather than commodity stock plate.
Position in the LadderOne step down, Q390 carries 390 MPa yield and 490–650 MPa tensile; one step up sits the Q500/Q550 pair. Q460 is the grade to reach for when Q390 sections get too heavy or too thick but the move to Q550 pricing is not yet justified — typical sweet spots are boom sections, heavy frames and bridge reinforcement members.
Substitution NotesMoving a design between adjacent grades is a load-path decision: yield steps of 70 MPa (Q390→Q460) change member sizing, and the impact tier letters move with the grade. Keep the quality letter explicit on RFQs — quoting Q460 when the drawing means Q460D is how delivery disputes start.
Delivery and WeldingSupply condition runs controlled-rolled, normalized or quenched-and-tempered by thickness and agreement. Weldability stays in familiar low-hydrogen territory with preheat scaled by thickness; Z-quality can be added by agreement for through-thickness loaded joints.
